Public Education: A National Priority

Public schools teach 67% of Australia's students, but they only get 35% of Federal funding for education. Australia can't afford to short-change our children's education.

Giving public schools only 35% of federal funds for education, when they teach 67% of Australia's students is unfair and against Australia's best interests. To prosper beyond the resources boom we need to become a clever country; becoming a competitive, innovative, knowledge-based economy. The only way to do this is by investing in our education system; increasing the resources of our schools to enable our children to become the smarter and more productive workers of tomorrow. Given that public schools teach 67% of Australia’s students, we can’t become the clever country without increasing funding to our public schools. This means we must make public education a national priority. A special taskforce established by state, territory and commonwealth ministers found that only 5% of public schools are properly resourced and to properly resource all our public schools requires an extra $2.9 billion per year of funding. In the interests of our nation's children and our future, I urge to adopt a policy that will deliver the extra funding our public schools deserve.
